Observing Positive Interactions & Responsive Inclusive Relationships Assignment
Value – 30%
Due: See Blackboard/Critical Path
Purpose:
- The experience was designed to help you recognize and document when educators engage in practices that help foster responsive inclusive relationships with children. It also requires that you make evidence-based recommendations to improve practice when a responsive inclusive approach is not apparent.
Learning outcome assessed:
- L.O. # 6 – Assess responsive inclusive relationships nurture children’s self-esteem and positive self-concept to support healthy development in children in diverse early childhood settings
- L.O. # 7 – Examine strategies that early childhood professionals use to nurture confidence and mastery in children in diverse early childhood settings
- L.O. # 9 – Analyze adult-child interactions to recommend strategies for supporting responsive inclusive relationships with children in diverse early childhood settings
INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1 – Choose and view ONE of the following videos below:
- “Sand Container Conflict”
- “Dryden Deserves an Icepack”
- “Jack Overcomes Obstacles”
All videos are uploaded to Kanopy’s website and can be accessed through the Humber Library by clicking on the following link: https://www.kanopy.com/en/humber/video/88980 (NOTE: You may need to use your Humber user ID and password to log in).
Step 2 – Download the worksheet and record the information on the video clip.
- Download the worksheet from Blackboard.
- Record the name of the video you watched.
- Record an anecdotal observation that describes the behaviour and emotions the child(ren) in the video clip demonstrated. Include what you saw and what you heard, adhering to the following guidelines for documenting observations:
| Guidelines for Documenting Observations
¨ Where possible, address the following…WHO was involved in the interaction (indicate by using their initials); WHEN did the interaction take place (approximate date & time); WHERE did the observation take place (indoors or outdoors? which learning area?) & WHAT did the interaction entail? ¨ Document in the past tense; ¨ Maintain objectivity (i.e. record only what you see and what you hear…not what you think); ¨ Maintain anonymity of individuals observed (i.e. use initials or Child A/Child B); ¨ Use gender neutral pronouns (i.e. “they”; “their”); ¨ Use clear language at all times (i.e. Write in full sentences; Strive for minimal/no mechanical errors; Avoid E.C.E. jargon.); ¨ Use concrete/specific language (ex. “R. rolled the ball across the floor.” NOT “R. played with the ball.”). ¨ Be appropriate detailed – neither too descriptive, nor too brief (i.e. Record only those details that are most relevant to the interaction). |
Step 3 – Describe the adult’s response.
- How did the adult respond to the child(ren)’s needs and behaviours in the video clip? Describe how the adult responded.
- Is the strategy the educator used a direct response or an indirect response? How do you know? Cite evidence from the video to substantiate your claims.
Step 4 – Write recommendation for improvement #1.
- Use one of the strategies from Guiding Young Children: 21 Strategies by Klein (2007) to make a recommendation to the adult (NOTE: There are only 18 listed)? Be sure to include theory from class notes and/or course readings to support the recommendation made. Explain in approximately of 150 to 200 words.
- Discuss how the recommendation aligns with Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years by choosing 1 Principle for Practice discussed in the Excerpts from E.L.E.C.T. (BSEP, 2007; OMEd, 2014b) document OR 1 Foundation discussed in the How Does Learning Happen? (OMEd, 2014a) document (i.e. Describe how the Foundation or Principle connects to your strategy). Explain in approximately 150 to 200 words.
Step 5 – Write recommendation for improvement #2.
- Use one of the strategies from Chapter 2: Creating an Emotionally Supportive and Equitable Environment by Julie Bullard (2017) to make a recommendation.
- How can the recommendation support responsive inclusive relationships with children in diverse early childhood settings? Be sure to include theory from your class notes and/or course readings to support the recommendation made. Explain in approximately of 150 to 200 words.
- Discuss how the recommendation aligns with the College of ECE’s (2017) Code of Ethics & Standards of Practice by choosing 1 standard (i.e. Describe how the standard connects to your strategy). Explain in approximately 150 to 200 words.
Step 6 – Submit the worksheet on Blackboard in .docx format.
- Proofread the worksheet to minimize errors in Canadian standard spelling, grammar and APA formatting.
- Please refer to the grading rubric to ensure all evaluation criteria have been met.

Assignment Summary:
Observing Positive Interactions and Responsive Inclusive Relationships
Step 1:
- Choose and view 1 of the following video clips @ https://www.kanopy.com/en/humber/video/88980. You will need your Humber username and password to view these videos.):
“Sand Container Conflict”
“Dryden Deserves an Icepack”
“Jack Overcomes Obstacles”
Step 2:
- Download the worksheet from the assignment folder on Blackboard.
- Record the name of the video you watched in the appropriate space on the worksheet.
- Write an anecdotal observation that captures what you saw and what you heard when you watched 1 scenario in your chosen video. Pay particular attention to the child’s/children’s behaviours and emotional disposition. Be sure to follow best practice standards for conducting/recording observations (see the detailed assignment description for a full list of these recommendations).
Step 3:
- Complete the “adult’s response” section of the worksheet. Record what you saw and what you heard when you viewed the adult’s reaction to the child’s/children’s behaviours.
- Identify whether the response was direct or indirect and justify your choice with evidence from the video. For a discussion of direct/indirect, please refer to the Professor’s PowerPoint presentation titled “Supporting Positive Interactions.”
Step 4:
- Make recommendation # 1. This will be a strategy the educator could have used in place of the one actually used. Refer to Guiding Young Children: 21 Strategies reading by Klein (2007), which you will find on Blackboard in the assignment folder. Choose and explain 1 of the strategies from that list.
- Identify whether the response was direct or indirect and justify your choice with evidence from the video.
- Discuss how the strategy you recommended supports responsive inclusive relationships with children. In your response, comment on 1 of the following:
- The value of relationships
- Diversity, equity and inclusion
- The importance of play to children’s learning
- Development of the whole child
- Connecting children to their natural environments
Be sure to include theory from class notes and/or course readings to substantiate the recommendation made. Remember to use current APA formatting when citing information derived from external resources.
- Discuss how the strategy you recommended is aligned with Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years. Specifically, explain how the recommendation supports 1 of the Foundations for Learning OR 1 of the Principles for Practice.
Step 5:
- Make recommendation # 2. Again, this will be a strategy the educator could have used in place of the one actually used. Refer to Guiding Young Children: 21 Strategies reading by Klein (2007). Choose and explain 1 of the strategies from that list.
- Discuss how the strategy you recommended supports responsive inclusive relationships with children. In your response, comment on 1 of the following:
- The value of relationships
- Diversity, equity and inclusion
- The importance of play to children’s learning
- Development of the whole child
- Connecting children to their natural environments
Be sure to include theory from class notes and/or course readings to support the recommendation made. Remember to use current APA formatting when citing information derived from external resources.
- Discuss how the recommendation aligns with the College of ECE’s (2017) Code of Ethics & Standards of Practice. To do this, choose 1 standard from the document and describe how it connects to recommendation # 2.
Step 6:
- Review the assignment rubric to ensure that your work meets all the required criteria.
- Once your work is complete, upload your submission to the appropriate drop box on Blackboard. Be sure to save your assignment as a .doc or .docx file as this makes providing electronic feedback much easier. Assignments submitted as a .pdf will be returned to students (ungraded) and will need to be resubmitted as a Word file.
