Formal Proposal to the Board of Directors

Task:

Write a formal proposal to the Board of Directors. Start out with an introduction that will hook your audience and emphasize why the cause is an important one to consider. Next, outline the major issues or problems by referring to specific evidence from collected sources TWO peer-reviewed articles). Then, refer the Board to a not-for-profit organization of your choosing and specify what areas the funding will address. Finally, wrap up your proposal with a conclusion that leaves a strong lasting impression of how the Board’s funding will be impactful.

Considerations:

The Board of Directors are more concerned with the cause than the advocate. They have invested in philanthropic causes before, so emotional appeals will have a limited impact on this audience. Maintain a formal tone, rely on strong evidence from credible sources, and make sure that your spelling, grammar, and mechanics are impeccable. Your multi-paragraph proposal should be well-organized (i.e. four to six paragraphs), and remember to include citations and a References page. Your ability to construct an argument, use appropriate evidence, and maintain a formal tone will determine the effectiveness of your proposal.

Formatting:

  1. Your proposal should be approximately 600-700 words in length (excluding direct quotations and references).
  2. You must double-space your assignment and use size 12 font.
  3. Proofread your work carefully. You will be evaluated on proper spelling, grammar, and sentence structure, and for meeting the requirements of a formal proposal.
  4. You should include outside research from TWO peer-reviewed journal articles. Use of direct quotations should be limited (under 10%) and properly-integrated. The majority of your assignment should be written in your own words.
  5. Please include an APA-format title page, which includes the title of your proposal, your name, the recipient’s name (e.g. “The Board of Directors for Seneca Ltd.”), and the date. Please follow proper sentence and paragraph structure.
  6. Your proposal must include correctly formatted in-text citations and a References page at the end.
  7. Your proposal must be submitted as a Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) or PDF file extension.

After you have completed writing the Proposal for Part C of the Transfer Project, please complete a short journal entry reflecting on your writing experience Your entry should be approximately 100 words in length and be written in full sentences and paragraph format (please avoid writing ;your reflection as point-form, bulleted notes).

Topics:

Please address the following questions/topics in your Reflection Journal:

  1. Audience – Who is your audience, and how did this affect your tone?
  2. Supporting Details – How did you approach the research component? Did you find it easy or more difficult to incorporate peer-reviewed article sources?
  3. Persuasion – What mode of persuasion (ethos, pathos, or logos) did you rely on to establish yourself as a reliable and responsible advocate? Do you think you were able to anticipate the ‘hostile reader’ and any questions they may have?
