Clash of Cultures: Europeans and Native Americans
The Essay Prompt asks you to discuss how the identity of Father Laforgue is challenged over the course of the film (The Black Robe). To do so requires that you discuss several examples in the film for when his identity is put to the test. For a short paper like this, I strongly suggest that you identify only 3-4 examples. Thus, your paper should have an introductory paragraph, followed by 3-4 paragraphs (each of the paragraphs should be devoted to an example from the film), and a conclusion.
For the 3-4 example paragraphs, be sure that you fully explain the particular scene from the film AND discuss how it relates to the essay prompt. In other words, how does that example serve to show how the identity of Father Laforgue is challenged over the course of the film.
Question: Historians have often described Europeans and Native American contact as a “clash of cultures.” In the case of the main character, Father Laforgue, discuss how his cultural identity (French or European) is challenged over the course of the film.
NOTE: I do not want outside resources. So there should be no outside resources. The only source should be the movie.
