Protagonist in “Julius Caesar”
Choose one of the four major characters—Caesar, Brutus, Antony, or Cassius—and, in 600-800 words, construct an argument that your chosen character is the true protagonist of the play, the character with whom you principally sympathize or for whom you feel a particular interest.
Ask yourself some questions as you prepare to write.
- Does your character determine the action and general movement of the play?
- Does he represent the values that the play as a whole appears to endorse?
- Do his actions and the development of his character point to a “tragic” conclusion, as you understand tragedy?
- How do the other characters in the play regard your chosen protagonist?
Be sure to cite specific lines, scenes, and actions in the play that support your viewpoint.
