Discuss the philosophical/scientific understanding of the concepts of self and mind
You will be asked to write three essays for this course. Each essay is designed for you to understand, reflect, and integrate material from the textbook and our class discussions into a thoughtful and original essay. Papers will require you to demonstrate knowledge of the main theories in its similarities and differences. Each essay should be approximately 4-6 pages in length and follow the APA formatting and style guidelines (7th edition). I would expect at least 3 references. Please do not use the instructor or the class PowerPoints as a bibliographical reference. Dates for essay submissions are presented on the course outline. For more information on the evaluation, please consult the rubric.
Essay 1: Discuss the philosophical/scientific understanding of the concepts of self and mind as they have evolved from ancient to modern times. Note their relevance to contemporary psychology, their relevance to the society/culture in which they existed, and what was understood as “the good life”. Specifically, discuss mind and self in terms of ancient philosophy, renaissance and science, empiricism vs. rationalism, and romanticism.
