Assignment #1 – Exploring Ontario Human Rights
Instructions:
Choose ONE of the following three options:
- Analysis and Reflection
- Write about an experience in the first person where you or someone close to you were discriminated against based on one of the 17 grounds in the Ontario Human Rights Code
- Write an analysis, connecting to the code (handouts/website), clearly identifying which code it applies, how it is a violation of the code
- Finish by explaining what steps should be taken for legal help or tribunal to rectify the issue if it were to happen again (or what steps did take place that did resolve the HR issue)
- Use references to cite for the code and tribunal process
- Informational Essay: A History of HR in Ontario
- Choose one of the general code grounds (ex. Sex and Orientation, Family and Marital Status, Race or Origin, etc…) used in Ontario code
- Write to inform about the concept itself (in the introduction) and describe clearly, with some references, the past and present of the ground (its inception, change, clarification, etc…)
- Use at least 3 different references
- Analytical Critique
- Choose a specific issue involved with Human Rights in Canada (ex. Catholic Education funding; the Tribunal; treatment of Aboriginal Women; Quebec laws)
- Write an analysis of the issue, describing what it is, how it is an issue, if it still exists, and if so what is being (or is not being done) about the issue
- Use at least 3 different references
ANY of the chosen options MUST fulfill the following:
- Minimum word limit of 750
- Have an APA Cover Page and References
- Appropriate content connected to the course material (code, HR issue, tribunal, etc…)
