ASSIGNMENT 3: Working in Childcare (30%)
Learning Outcomes
- Analyze the health and safety standards/procedures to assess and maintain compliance of indoor/outdoor environments to the highest quality
- Interpret provincial CCEYA, CECE, municipal, and national legislations and regulations in regards to human rights, child protection, and standards of health, safety, and nutrition practices to support the highest level of quality care
- Apply the importance of following Canada’s Food Guide and the nutritional guidelines for children to provide health in an early learning environment
- Assess the developmental factors which affect health, safety and well-being in accordance with HDLH and ELECT to provide optimum program quality
- Appraise the current health and safety guidelines as they meet licensing regulations
Purpose
When working with children, from the minute they arrive in a child care centre to when they leave, the day is full. As a RECE, you are responsible for the children’s safety, nutrition, and providing a healthy day in an early childhood classroom. Learning what is required regarding safety policies and practices, how to provide and support nutrition as well as preventing and managing the child’s health takes time. This report will enable you the learner to examine a child’s day and focus on the necessary elements of each of these for a particular age group.
Mode of Completion:
You will create a Parent Handbook to help inform families of daily routines. Handbook should include:
- Cover Page (APA requirements)
- Table of contents including 3 sections (Illness, Safety, Nutrition)
- Reference page
Please note, if any pictures are used, they must be properly cited and a short caption must be included.
When preparing the parent handbook, remember you are presenting this to families, therefore your communications and applications MUST be clear and informative.
Part 1: Illness – Reference to Toronto Public Health, CCEYA is required in this section

- Provide a hands-on learning experience that can be practiced at childcare and at home to help reinforce one of the safety elements you have identified This cannot be simply reading a book to the children. Be Creative!

Part C: Promoting Active Living
Using the same age group chart identified in the nutrition section, provide 2 examples of how you (RECE) will promote active living with your designated age group outdoors. Additionally, how can you suggest similar active living experiences to be practiced by families at home. This section should include details of hand-on practices or games along with details of how active living is being promoted and practiced.
