The Growth of Prince Hal
In 1,000-1,500 words, trace the development of Prince Hal through the three plays Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2, and Henry V.
Ask yourself some questions as you prepare to write:
- What, in general, happens to him between the beginning of Henry IV, Part 1 and the last part of Henry V?
- Which encounters, and with which characters, most contribute to his “education?” What, exactly, does he learn over these three plays? What, if anything, do other characters learn about him?
- What do we, as audience, learn about him that he does not appear to learn about himself?
- What kind of king does he become? What, if anything, does he lose of himself along the way?
Be sure to cite specific passages in the play that support your understanding of Hal’s development through the Henriad.
